Quartz: the Biggest Trend in Countertops for 2019

What will be the biggest trend in countertops for 2019 and likely years to come? The answer: quartz. Quartz countertops were originally introduced years ago as a high-end alternative to granite. But quartz has come a long way over the years and offers a wide variety of styles homeowners love.

At Minneapolis Granite we specialize in quartz countertops for Eagan and the surrounding areas, and we would like to discuss a few more of its many benefits and why we believe it will be one of the biggest trends in countertops this year.

quartz countertops
One of the biggest trending finishes in quartz countertops right now is matte or ‘honed’ finishes. Honed finish is a matte finish with little to no shine. In 2019, quartz manufacturers will continue to impress with manufacturing improvements such as these as well as trending designs that will keep this countertop material at the top of the list. Not just for this year, but for quite some time to come.

Quartz countertops are great because they come in a multitude of styles including some that come with swirls and unique patterns that make them almost indistinguishable from the natural stone varieties. Since they come in so many colors and patterns, it is easy to find the quartz countertops to match your unique home. Quartz fits easily with a variety of design styles from the classic cottage kitchen to sleek, modern and industrial design.

Add to that the fact that quartz is extremely strong and you can see why this low maintenance material is not going anywhere soon as the countertop material of choice for many homeowners. Quartz countertops are also extremely low maintenance. Quartz a very hard material that’s both stain and scratch resistant. Stains, mold and odor-causing bacteria can’t penetrate quartz’s surface due to its non-porous nature, making it perfect for the kitchen, bathroom and other rooms in the home.

Quartz countertops are also comparable to granite and other natural stone in price. And, like their natural counterparts, they won’t sacrifice on style. If your home is in need of a lot of countertop space, quartz just might be the material for you this year.

Super Tips for Cleaning Granite Countertops

As experts in the industry, we know a few good tricks to help keep granite sparkling clean. That’s why we’ve decided to put together a list of some of our favorite tips and life hacks to help keep your granite kitchen countertops looking as shiny and impressive as the day they were installed. At Minneapolis Granite, we specialize in granite kitchen countertops for Apple Valley and the surrounding areas. And, we get a few questions from customers about how to care for their granite countertops. Here are a few tips and tricks to try:

  1. Never use harsh chemicals on your granite kitchen countertops! Once a week wipe your granite countertops down with a damp cloth and a stone cleaner formulated with a neutral pH. Even if you think the stain or mess needs it, never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on your countertops. These costly, complicated chemicals can can scratch, pit, and etch the surface of the stone permanently.
  2. For oily stains that have soaked into the granite, try a solution made of a cup of flour or baking soda and about five tablespoons of dish soap. Add water to make it the consistency of yogurt. Place it directly on the stain and cover with plastic wrap overnight. Then, wash it away. Be sure to gently rinse and dry the granite kitchen countertops thoroughly.
  3. A little dusting can go a long way with a microfiber cloth. Often a microfiber cleaning cloth, even a dry one, is all that is needed for basic cleaning. For times when spills or daily life happen, try to wipe down your granite kitchen countertops daily or as needed using only water.
  4. Have them sealed. Never had your granite kitchen countertops sealed? Sealing is a regular maintenance task for granite that should be performed every 3-5 years. When we fabricate and install your granite kitchen countertops, we will apply a sealant to the granite that should last for the life of the counters. If for some reason the sealant needs to be reapplied, there is one telltale sign. To determine if your countertops need to be sealed, splash a little water on the surface of the countertop. It the water flows freely and does not bead up, it might be time to re-seal your granite kitchen countertops.

Countertops that Complement Your Kitchen & Your Needs

From trending styles and budget to durability and color, there are many aspects to consider when choosing new kitchen countertops for your home. And family’s needs. As experts and fabricators of granite kitchen countertops in Brooklyn Park, we have put together a rundown of the things to consider while perusing countertop options.

Do you need durability?
If you use your kitchen often, entertain, cook or have growing children, you will likely need kitchen countertops that are durable and can stand up to the ware and tear of everyday life. Granite kitchen countertops will be non-porous, making them stain, heat, scratch and chip resistant. They are also bacteria resistant which makes them an ideal option for the kitchen or bathroom.

Do you know what colors will complement?
When it comes to granite kitchen countertops, it is important to choose ones with colors that complement your cabinetry. First, never match your cabinets exactly; this could result in a sterile or uniform appearance that is unpleasant to the eye. Choose countertops that have specks or flecks of your cabinetry’s color or include complementary hues. Does your kitchen have oak cabinets in medium to light brown? Go for a contrasting color for a beautiful, eye-catching look. At Minneapolis Granite, we offer a huge selection of colors and patterns. We offer reds, oranges, purples, beiges, greens, grays and blends of these color patterns. If you are a stylish sort, we have the color to match. Classic, more traditional styled? There is an option for you as well. Come over to our showroom to browse all of our color options. Bring in a sample of your cabinets and we can even help you choose the perfect granite kitchen countertops to complement them.

Are you looking to add value to your home?
The best place to start is the kitchen. Granite kitchen countertops are one of the top things new homebuyers look for in a new home and can raise your home’s value.

Common Granite Misconceptions Debunked!

Have you heard certain things about granite and aren’t quite sure what to believe? You are not alone! As a company that fabricates and installs granite for Edina bathroom vanities, kitchen countertops, and more; we often hear some myths and misconceptions about granite. So we wanted to take some time to dispel some of those. That way, if you are looking into having granite counters put into your Twin Cities area home, you will know and understand all of their benefits and the many ways they can enhance your home’s interior and décor. Take a look at these false statements and read on to get the truth about granite.

MYTH: Granite is way too expensive.

Granite is actually affordable for most budgets. Much of the cost depends on the specific slab that you select. If you want to learn more about the granite we can supply for bathroom vanity countertops, give us a call and we can even give you a free estimate so you know how much to budget for.

MYTH: Granite doesn’t last very long.

Thanks to the way granite is formed, it is incredibly durable and long-lasting. Your new granite countertops could last for several decades.

MYTH: Granite has a lot of tiny pores that can harbor bacteria and germs.

Granite is non-porous, which means it will not harbor bacteria or germs. If you are concerned, you can use a very mild disinfecting soap on them. But there is no need to use a disinfectant on a regular basis.

MYTH: Granite stains easily.

While spills should be wiped up as soon as possible after they happen, granite is actually quite difficult to stain. And if the counters do get stained, the stains are usually very easy to remove. Granite counters do not lose their polished look that easily either. Normal use will not remove the polished finish, even after many years.

MYTH: Granite needs to be resealed every year or two.

Depending on the type of granite you purchase, your granite counters might never need to be resealed. All of the granite that we fabricate will be sealed as part of the fabrication process.

If you are ever worried that your granite counters need to be resealed, there is a simple test you can do. Simply place a drop of water on the counters. Does the water bead up? Then your granite counters do not need to be resealed.

Oh, the Decisions You Will Make: You & Your New Granite Countertops

Looking into new granite kitchen countertops for your Plymouth home? This is an exciting time! Everyone knows that granite makes an excellent material for kitchens due to its durability, style and variety. But, before you get to sit back and enjoy your stunning new granite kitchen countertops, there will be a few decisions you will have to make about their fabrication and installation. As experts in all things granite, the professionals at Minneapolis Granite have put together a overview on what to expect when selecting your home’s new stylish addition.

granite kitchen countertops

On Sealing
Most manufacturers of granite countertop slabs seal the granite before it is fashioned into what it will ultimately be used for. One type of granite may be more porous than another type of granite.
Occasionally, you may have to reseal your granite kitchen countertops. Indicators emerge when resealing is called for. For example, keep an eye out for water beading or if you place a glass upon your granite and a ring occurs, resealing may be necessary.

Choosing Your Slab of Granite
When you are picking out new granite kitchen countertops, you should definitely see the granite slabs in person before you buy. That way, you can see firsthand the styles, colors and patterns you have to choose from. If you just see the countertops online or in a picture, it can be difficult to tell what the true colors or patterns are and how they look in different lighting or in your unique design. Seeing them in person can help you decide what colors and patterns you like best.

Consider Unique Edge Profiles
Make that slab yours! Once you’ve selected your granite slab, it’s time to customize your new granite kitchen countertops and make them uniquely yours. A custom edge profile is one of the ways to get even more about your granite kitchen countertops. There are a number of standard options, which can be added on for no charge. Custom edge treatments can be added on for a fee. There is no right or wrong choice, just whatever you think will look best with your home’s unique style.
