A History of Marble: Burnsville and Beyond

We here at Minneapolis Granite fabricate and install marble counters. Burnsville is one of the Twin Cities areas that takes advantage of our services. We gave a brief history of marble and marble counters, and now we’d like to add a bit more detail to that history.

The Ancient Greeks built much of their civilization on marble and marble counters. Greece contains the largest and widest of varieties of marble found in the world. After awhile, the rest of the world caught on to the Greeks’ beautiful marble-making abilities and started importing Greek marble to create their own monuments, statues, buildings and marble counters. At first, white marble was the most popular, but soon enough the colored marble counters caught on.

White Pentelicon marble is known as some of the world’s purest and most precious marble, and it is quarried in the Penteli mountain region just north of Athens. It is also known as “Marmo Pentelico” or “Marmo Greco Fino.” The columns at the temple at Artemis at Ephesus (which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World) are made of multicolored marble.

Minneapolis Granite takes a great deal of pride in our ability to fabricate and install marble and marble counters in any Burnsville home. Granted, we don’t get our marble counters from the Penteli mountains, but the marble we use for our marble counters is the finest quality we can get our hands on. We pass that quality onto our Burnsville customers to help make their homes a thing of beauty.

Granite Countertops: Regular Maintenance

You’ve had granite countertops installed, but you might not be sure how to maintain them. Never fear! At Minneapolis Granite, we are here to provide you with some general granite countertop cleaning and maintenance tips. For those living all around the Twin Cities, including Minneapolis, granite countertops can add extra appeal to your home. In this blog, we're going to explain some of the most common ways to maintain your granite countertops.

Cleaning
Regular cleaning for sanitation is necessary. If your granite countertops are in your kitchen, it is important to clean up any spills or crumbs as they occur. This will help to prevent any grime build up. If your granite countertops are in your bathroom, they will need cleaned as often as you clean the rest of your bathroom. For granite countertops around the rest of your home, clean them as part of your routine housecleaning schedule.

Sealing & Resealing
When you first have your granite countertops installed, they will be sealed for a couple of reasons. First, granite is a porous natural stone. Therefore, without a sealant, it would be possible for water and other liquids to get into the grooves. The sealant is applied also helps to add durability to your countertops. You will need to have your granite countertops resealed about every one to four years, depending on the frequency of use.

Refinishing
Finally, the most drastic measure you'd have to take to maintain your granite countertops would be to refinish them. This is done by one of our Minneapolis granite countertop experts. Refinishing your granite countertops is only necessary after serious damage comes to your countertops. If you have an acidic stain or major chip, you may need to get your granite countertops refinished.
